It was described in Ramayana, when King Janak was ploughing the land a golden casket was found a baby girl was inside. The land is known as Sita birth place. The new name of the place is Punaura Dham around 5km far from Sitamarhi Railway station.

Sita kund or Janaki Kund famous as the ashram of Pundarik Rishi. Devi Sita was born in Punaura, 5 km west of Sitamarhi railway station. There is a holy tank which is known as Sita kund. Bhakt takes bath in that holy pond. It is believed that, you will get a child if you will bath in the tank.
